Exquisitely Dark and Beautiful Burton

Today I had the pleasure of watching Tim Burton's latest creation, Alice in Wonderland, in 3D. Without giving too much away, its not just a remake of the Disney version. Depp was my favourite as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska really captured the naivety and depth of Alice. All the wonderful characters are back from Tweedle Dee and Dum to the wise, 'high' caterpillar.

I especially liked Helena Bonham Carter in the role of the evil Red Queen. Her annoying lisp and whiney nature added the usual humour to Burton's dark version of Lewis Carrol's "Through the Looking Glass".

Alice and the Hatter's relationship was particularly interesting and touching. According to Wasikowska "They have an understanding about each other. They both feel like outsiders and feel alone in their separate worlds, and have a special bond and friendship." I have always been fascinated by the book and Lewis Carrol's twisting of words and language to accentuate the curious and strange situation that Alice finds herself in. Burton uses the Jabberwocky poem as the base for the movie. As said by the Hatter in the movie:

And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back.

Tim Burton's Wonderland was quite spectacular though scarier and more decayed than the previous Disney version. Here we have the actor and director in all their glory: FABULOUS make up, special effects and costumes!!

Here's to glorious mushrooms, hearts and crazy talking animals. Here's to 6 impossible things before breakfast.
